Ealing Transition Book Club

Ealing Transition Initiative has its very own book club, formed by members from across Ealing's community. We meet monthly to discuss, debate and understand issues raised in the books we decide to explore. We are just about to begin the 'Spell of the Sensuous' by David Abram and welcome anyone wishing to join us in reading this.

The Spell of the Sensuous explores how we as human beings have distanced ourselves from nature, asking 'how did humans come to sever their ancient reciprocity with the natural world?' and 'what will it take for us to recover a sustaining relation with the breathing earth?' To get us in the mood for the book we decided to watch the BBC documentary 'Earth Pilgrim: A spiritual journey into the landscape of Dartmoor' which was a beautiful discovery of Dartmoor through the seasons, presented from the spiritual perspective of ecologist and Earth pilgrim Satish Kumar.

Suitably inspired, we are now starting to read the first three chapters of The Spell of the Sensuous in time for our next meeting.

The next meetings will take place on:

  • Sunday 18th July, 7.30pm, hosted by a book club member
  • Sunday 19th September, 7.30pm, hosted by a book club member

We are a friendly bunch and always welcome new members, so if you are interested in finding out more or want to come along to our next meeting, please don.t hesitate to get in touch.

Copies of 'Spell of the Sensuous' are available through the book club at £12 (ordered through Green Spirit).

Email gemmapearson78@googlemail.com or call her on 07879 654 142 for details of where we will be meeting, and if you would like to obtain a book.

Previous books we've read:

  • The Transition Handbook (Rob Hopkins)
  • Local Food: How to make it happen in your community (Tamzin Pinkerton and Rob Hopkins)
